In the major cities of Nepal, especially ones frequented by tourists i.e. Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Chitwan, & Nagarkot etc, you will find well resourced shopping malls that sell almost everything and anything under the sky; From clothes, shoes, accessories, sports wear, electronic goods, cosmetics, food and decoration items to kitchen wares and trek gear. You can purchase whatever you need, it's all there. In Nepal, shopping of both local and imported goods is possible and there are no limits to the varieties on display. Most shops and clothing stores have fixed price tags clearly placed on the goods.
But in the smaller shops, you can strike up a good bargain on the prices for most items available. Being a 'white' skinned foreigner means 'you're rich', most local folks think this way; so you will need to bargain with the locals to a standstill, and this can sometimes be fun, especially if you can speak a little of the local lingo. While shopping in Nepal, it is advisable to carry Nepali currency in cash as most of the shops only accept cash. Try to avoid doing transactions in dollars, or the locals may start 'counting their blessings one by one'. If you didn't have time to change your dollars in the bank, then make sure you know the day's standing rate in local currency for dollars. While In Kathmandu, New road and Kingsway (durbar marg) are the most popular places for shopping. But then Thamel & the Bhatbateni supermarket has more variety and better prices. It's our advice that you check them out first.
