Nepal: Then & Now, A Brief History

With the passing of each century, Nepal witnessed many rulers and dynasties play contributing roles in molding Nepal to what it is today; present day Modern Nepal, running between a thin red line that separates the old from the new. The Kirantis ruled Nepal in the 13th century and then was followed by the Thakuris who belonged to the Malla dynasty. After this the Shah Dynasty took over the reins of power by the all conquering King Prithvi Narayan Shah who actually unified a divided kingdom that was literally ruled by warlords who created their own feudalistic systems & own fiefdoms that was ruled more by the sword than actual governance. King Prithvi was the sole ruler responsible for uniting different kingdoms into one single nation in 1769. In 1846, the Kot massacre led by Jung Bahadur Rana put a dampener on the power of the monarchy and thus brought the Rana regime to power.

Consequently and thereafter, the first government comprising of the Nepali congress party and the Ranas was installed with the promise of free elections in 1952. Tantamount to this, In1960, King Mahendra, son of King Tribhuvan tactically established the Panchayat system, meaning 'five councils system', by engineering a coup, declaring a new constitution, imprisoning all the leaders of the then government and enforcing a ban on all political activities. This prompted a People's Movement which took off in 1990 and opened up a new chapter for a decade of democracy in Nepal which led to a multiparty democracy with constitutional monarchy. However, Democracy came with a heavy price, leading to incompetent political leaders, political conflicts, a destructive Maoist insurgency, rampant corruption and a plunge in the national economy; and the worst was yet to come.

And it came with the massacre of the Royal family in 2001 which left the world in complete shock. King Gynendra was crowned Nepal's king after the assassination of his elder brother, King Birendra. This tragedy led to political instability and absolute chaos. With the advent of 2006, all the major political parties committed themselves to rectifying their past mistakes and with the Maoist rebels came together with support from the Nepalese people and jointly embarked on a political struggle for several weeks that included general strikes, violent demonstrations and ignoring strict curfews which led to injuries & death among demonstrators in the fight to restore democracy.

Finally, King Gyanendra capitulates and hands over political power to the Nepalese people and democracy was once again restored in Nepal.
